Car battery: how long it lasts and the signs it's dying
Most car batteries last around three to five years, depending on climate, driving habits and the type of battery.
Warning signs: the engine cranks slowly, lights dim when starting, the battery warning light comes on, electrical features act up, or the stop-start system stops working.
Short trips are hard on batteries: the alternator doesn't get enough time to recharge it. Cars that sit for weeks can also go flat.
Cars with stop-start often need a specific battery type (EFB or AGM) — fitting the wrong one can shorten its life.
A quick battery test tells you whether it needs charging or replacing. On MYLES, battery tests and replacements can be done at a workshop or at your place.
