What is wof inspection?
A Warrant of Fitness is a regular safety check that light vehicles in New Zealand must pass to be driven legally.
A WOF inspection is carried out by an authorised inspector who checks key safety items such as tyres, brakes, lights, steering, suspension, seatbelts, windscreen, wipers and structural rust. If your car passes, you get a new WOF label; if it fails, you get a list of items to fix and a set time to bring it back for a recheck.
Signs you need it
- Your current WOF is about to expire
- You have bought a car without a current WOF
- You have had repairs that may affect safety
- You received a fail sheet and need a recheck
How it works
- Inspector checks lights, tyres and wipers
- Brakes, steering and suspension are inspected
- Seatbelts, glass and bodywork are checked for damage or rust
- You receive a pass label or a list of items to repair
This service is carried out at a workshop.
How much does it cost?

Why it matters
Essential: driving without a current WOF is illegal and can affect your insurance.
